A GMO is a genetically modified organism. They are in about 60-80% of the packaged food you buy. Most people want a label on their food informing them if their is a GMO in there food. If their is a label on their food letting them know it contains a GMO the price of their food will get higher. In other countries like Australia, Japan, and China there was a law passed that makes them label all of their GMO food. Other than that law passed in those countries, there has been a push to get get GM food labeled. Most people think that they deserve to know what is in there food. There are a few projects and associations pushing to have our food labeled on not labeled. Overall the issue is that people defied to go on eating what they are eating with no information on what’s in it or they know what’s is in and decide if they will eat it or not.

Opinion: I think we should know what is in our food. Personally I don't they are benifiting us in a healthy way. Also I do not think the labeling of GMO's should increase price. They already labeling the ingredints and a GMO is practically one. I think labeling them will keep us aware of how many of these chemicals we are putting into our body.

Questions:
1. Do think GMO's should be labeled on a food?
2. Do you think if they are labeled do you think the purchase of the products will go down.
3. If they decided that GMO's will not be labled and that was the final decision, do you think there would be any effects of that?

  1. 1. I think that GMO's should be labeled because people deserve to know what is in their food and in my opinion, you should not pay extra for food if there is a label on it. I think people who buy organic food and really focus on eating healthy and want their food to be clean and healthy shouldn't pay extra for labels.

    2. Well according to the blog the price will go up and I also think the price will go up because manufacturers of the food want to make a profit. In my opinion the food should not cost more because of the label.

    3. I don't think there would be much affects but some people may complain and argue as to why there are no labels on their food. I think the manufacturers of the food may argue because they want to make more profit of the label, if the food cost more with the label. I wouldn't argue or complain if that decision was made but if they were genetically modifying food extremely, then I would probably have something to say.

  2. Opinion: I believe that we should label our GMO produced food. Not because I believe they have anything wrong with them, but I just think its the principle of things. Everything is labeled with ingridents, chemicals used, and whats in the food. So I believe that we should have the right to know which foods are from GMO's. This article ties into what we learned in class beacuse we have been learning a great deal on GMO's and how they are made, and we have talked about if they should be labeled or not.
Question: Do you think we should label GMO products? Why or why not?
Why do you think GMO companies do not want their food labeled to say they were from GMO's? explain.
Do you think that they will pass legislation to make sure GMO products are labeled. Why or why not?

  3. For our blog, I decided to invite Darya Pino, who is a Ph.D-trained scientist who is currently dealing with the matter of GM food labels. I chose to invite her because she is facing first hand matters with the debate on whether or not we should label our GM foods with a label on them providing the consumer with the information telling them that it is a genetically modified food. She has even provided her own opinion on this problem, and has sided with the decision that we should put labels on our GM foods warning buyers that it is a GM. She obviously knows what she is talking about since she knows about these deals from experience, and could really provide us with good incite on our blog. Here is what I have emailed her: "Hello, my name is Collin and I am a 9th grader who attends Hatboro-Horsham High School. In my environmental science class, we are writing blogs on different topics and this blog deals with the matter of whether or not we should label our GM foods. It would be great if you could look over our blog and leave a comment on how it is. Thank you for your time and here is the link to our blog: http://elitesciencesquad.blogspot.com/2012/12/picture-this-show-what-kind-of-label.html
