Safe Drinking Water Availability and Importance http://www.worldwatercouncil.org/index.php?id=25

Picture:
This map shows what percentage of population by country that doesn’t have access to clean and safe drinking water.

Summary:
As the worlds population is increasing immensly so is the demand for clean and safe drinking water. More than one out of six people lack access to safe drinking water, namely 1.1 billion people, and more than two out of six lack adequate sanitation, about 2.6 billion people. 3,900 children die every day from water borne diseases and 1.8 million people die every year from diarrhoeal diseases. Over 260 river basins are shared by two or more countries mostly without adequate legal or institutional arrangements. Also as the population increases so does the use of water and this not only reduces water available for industrial and agricultural development but has a big effect on aquatic ecosystems and their dependent species. One of the main objectives by the World Water Council is to increase the awareness of the water issue and provide safe water for those who don’t have it. Water is more important than we think and it is important that it’s clean and safe when we drink it because we can get sick and even die.

Opinion/Reflection:

Most of this information shocked me because I wasn't expecting 1.1 billion people lacking safe drinking water and 2.6 billion people needing adequate sanitation. I was also very surprised to see that 3,900 children die everyday from water borne diseases. I knew we had a problem with safe water and water pollution, but I didn't think it was this serious. People need to start doing something about this quick because it's only going to get worse. I like the fact that the World Water Council is trying to increase the awareness of the water problem and provide safe drinking water for those who don't have it. People really need to start thinking what water pollution is doing and stop it quick.

Questions:
1. Do you think the water pollution problem can be fixed, and how?
2. Do you think that what the World Water Council is doing helpful?
3. What would you do if you lacked safe drinking water?

  1. The article talks about certain countries that get the unclean water. The article talks about how if the areas conditions are bad or the poorer the area, it has to work harder for its water. It also talks about how much water people should be getting everyday. Also not just getting the right amount of water, but making sure its clean and able to drink. Link:

  2. I feel that the inability to access safe drinking water is a very big issue. Many people become very sick from diseases that can be caught from the unsafe water and in most instances people end up dying. If we make no effort to try and provide more pure water for people to drink, then this ongoing process of disease and death will occur for many. This issue easily relates back to what we are discussing in class about limiting factors. We have discussed that as of now, humans do not have any limiting factors but that there must be one to come for us in the future. The lack of safe drinking water seems to be a very likely limiting factor that may effect us later on.

    Questions:

About how many people lack access to safe drinking water and how many lack adequate sanitation?

What are some problems that are occurring from people not drinking safe and clean water?

What are some of the main objectives be taken into action to help the problem of unsafe drinking water?

Diarrhoeal and other diseases, and death.

Provide awareness to unsafe water, and to provide it for those who do not have it.

  3. The expert I chose to email to take a look at our an article is Dr. Howard Backer, and expert on hygiene. Dr. Backer has written many articles on hygiene and sanitation. Dr. Backer also writes articles on how to keep hygienically clean and on how to maintain clean water sources and dispose of waste properly. He received his medical doctorate in 1982 and has since written and published professional articles on how to purify drinking water and keep clean.

Here is a copy of my sent email:
    Dear Dr. Howard Backer,
Hello Dr. Backer my name is Roman and I am an 9th grade student that attends Hatboro- Horsham Senior High School in Horsham, Pennsylvania. In my Environmental science class we have to write blogs for class homework. We write them on issues that relate to environmental problems and we write our articles based on things that have a correlation of what we are working on in our class. For our group blog we have written an article about the importance of safe drinking water and how important drinking water and sanitation is for our country. Since you are a medical doctor, an expert, and have written articles on the internet about the importance of sanitation and hygiene, I ask of you to come and read over our article and comment on it. If you have the available time this would be much appreciated. A direct link to the article is below.

If you would look at our article and respond that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and effort and we hope to hear from you soon.
    Sincerely,
    Roman D.
